Meet J.A. Slack
Author and Illustrator

J.A. Slack is a native of California, earning  degrees and credentials in art, design, and education from California State University, Stanislaus and the University of California, Davis, studying under the masters in the named disciplines; Bet Borgeson, James Piscoti, Ralf Parton, John Barnett, Martin Camarata, and Winston Magee.

Slack is a member of the National League of American Pen Women with  headquarters located in Washington D.C. Famous women who have been members of the organization include Grandma Moses, Georgia O’Keeffe, Pearl S. Buck, Eleanor Roosevelt, Maya Angelou, and Rosalyn Carter, to name a few.

After graduation Slack’s inspiration for writing a nutritional picture book for kids came to her as she witnessed the dreadful eating habits of our youth consuming a diet of fats, sugar, and salt.

Slack comprehends that all people are exposed to this eating dilemma, so language has in addition become an important element in the writing of “CCNC.” The bilingual format of CCNC not only provides nutritional education for children in both languages, of English and Spanish, but has a dual purpose as a language learning tool for everyone. She invites multiple language translations of CCNC to serve the populace.

Crunching Carrots, Not Candy”  was culminated into a compelling reality that continues to sell worldwide, in hopes of fighting the global challenge of obesity.   In return children will become the driving force to change eating habits and implement the necessary active lifestyles for the whole family.

NOTE: CCNC was voted as one of the top 100 books for educators in a poll by the National Education Association, and (reviewed and featured) by Nurse Week Magazine, California Country Magazine, National Education Association, Today, Stanislaus Connections, Modesto Bee, Sacramento Bee, Manteca Bulletin, CW-31/CBS-13- Sacramento, CA, Food Site Of the Day, California State Fair, “Light Full Lady”, Borders Books, and various other means of mass communication.
