J.A. Slack is a native of California. She has earned degrees and credentials in art, design, and education from California State University, Stanislaus and the University of California, Davis, studying under the masters in the named disciplines; Bet Borgeson, James Piscoti, Ralf Parton, John Barnett, Martin Camarata, and Winston Magee.
Thereafter, Slack's inspiration for writing a nutritional picture book for kids came to her as she witnessed the dreadful eating habits of our youth consuming a diet of fats, sugar, and salt. With a great commitment for healthy eating and a desire to make a contribution to assist all children, Slack concluded that action was paramount.
Slack explored information for Crunching Carrots, NOT Candy and learned that 40% of all children are overweight in the state of California alone. In addition, she discovered that the Hispanic population is suffering from alarming diabetic problems related to obesity. However, Slack compassionately comprehends that all people are exposed to this eating dilemma so language has in addition become an important element in the writing of "CCNC." The bilingual format not only provides nutritional education for children in both language but has a dual purpose as a language learning tool for everyone. She invites multiple language translations of CCNC to serve the populace for learning about healthy eating.
As a result of months of research, writing, and illustration, Slack is proud to say that "Crunching Carrots, Not Candy" culminated into a compelling reality that continues to sell worldwide. Slack remains vigilant in her goal of providing children with the education needed to fight this global challenge. In return children will become the driving force to change eating habits and implement the necessary active lifestyles for the whole family.
